Harmonic Currents are common in most if not all data centre electrical networks. Without adequate filtering or attenuation they will prove to be damaging to the electrical network infrastructure and equipment resulting in premature failure and possibly catastrophic damage.
It is vital to remove harmonics at source before they enter the distribution network and permeate into other more sensitive equipment (typically that containing capacitors and switching semi conductors)
Our specific harmonic survey service identifies the source of harmonics, the equipment most at risk and, most importantly, the solution to removing this troublesome phenomenon.
There are three primary methods of changing harmonic spectra in electrical networks;
Detuned Power Factor Correction
Which uses the ‘filtering’ effect of inductance and capacitance to remove harmonic currents typically from the main switchgear.
Active Harmonic Filters
Which constantly monitor the harmonic spectra of a particular area of load and apply a harmonic reverse current to cancel out this distortion on the fundamental waveform.
Poly phase UPS and Drives
By increasing the phase count of rectifiers and drives the harmonic spectra can be relocated and tuned from the high current areas of the waveform spectra.
